Research & Analysis
The first, and one of the most essential steps in any historic preservation or cultural research management project, is the thorough research of the site. On completion of a site survey, there are many other resources available for consultation to help determine how the site was first developed and how it has changed over time. When all available information is gathered, it is analyzed to provide an understanding of the development of the site and the most important features that should be protected. All information will then be compiled into a final report which can take various forms depending on the needs of the client. Final reports are often incorporated into other documents such as historic designations, grant applications, and development proposals.
Histórica can assist with site survey, research, analysis, and production of the final report.
Please see below for examples of previous projects.
Significance Determinations

A significance determination is undertaken to determine the historic significance of a site. This may be required if historic designation, significant alteration, or demolition of a structure is being proposed. The research and analysis will focus on the architecture, history, historic association, and integrity of the site. Based on this analysis, the final report will make a recommendation as to whether the site is historically significant.
Thematic Studies

A thematic study is undertaken to determine the historic significance of a group of sites that have common themes. The information obtained from site surveys and research is used to define the themes which may include property type, architectural style, architect, period of significance, geographical location, and socio-economic factors. This is a useful method for designating non-contiguous sites that meet the parameters of the theme.
Historic Resource Surveys

A historic resource survey identifies, records, and evaluates historic sites within a community. Based on site surveys, research, and analysis of this information, the final report will identify those sites which have significance and offer advice on how they can be protected. This type of report can be used to prioritize preservation goals, develop planning policies, meet Section 106 requirements, and implement heritage tourism initiatives.
Historic Preservation Plans

A historic preservation plan identifies significant sites and cultural practices that are worthy of protection within a community. Public participation in the process encourages diverse views and inclusivity. The final plan, which is most effective when coordinated with other policies such as development, housing, transportation, and sustainability, helps to develop short-term goals and a long-term vision to assist with planning policy.
Historic Context Studies

A historic context study identifies and explains how sites are significant within historical patterns, themes, or trends. The study, which may be prepared for a single site or multiple sites, details the contexts and how the site or sites illustrate those contexts. The patterns, themes, or trends, which can include architectural styles, property types, and socio-economic factors, provide a background for understanding historic significance.
Feasibility Studies

A feasibility study is an assessment of the viability of a proposal. Through research and analysis of various factors such as potential use, planning and legal requirements, economics, technical factors, and the outcome of similar projects, the study will examine various options for the property and assess the potential for completing the project successfully. In most cases, the study will require input from several professional fields.
